Teutonic WePad to battle Apple

The manufacturer ”Neofonie” is enthering the war of the tablets! The company, a German “David” against the “Goliath of Cupertino”, plans to go head-to-head with Apple while betting on the shortcomings of the much-hyped iPad. The “WePad”  is supposedly going to sport a 11.3 inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 inches, while also featuring a 1.3 Megapixel Webcam, a card reader and 2 USB-ports.

The battery life will be around 6 hours vs. the expected 10 hrs of the iPad. However, both numbers come straight from the manufacturers and should be taken with a grain of salt. The WePad is going to run on a custom version of Linux and will therefore support Andoid apps. Considering that there are currently 30.000 of them – not a bad idea at all! Also, Neofonie is inviting everybody to develop for the WePad and sell their apps via their own “Meta-App-Store”.

Another big swing at Apple: WePad speaks Flash and AdobeAir! The latter will allow developers another way onto the device, opening up a multitude of opportunities for the Flash an Flex  developer.

However, Neofonie doesn’t stop there either: it has even developed its own EReader software, called WeMagazine ePublisher, aimed at offering publishers to port their digital content to various digital readers. The German magazine “Stern” is currently developing its digital version based on Neofonie’s software.
